New Zealand School of Business and Government (SBG) Withdrawal and Refund Policy

Students may withdraw from their course at any time, and SBG may also terminate a student's enrolment for reasons which are at SBG's discretion, and in line with SBG policy.

To apply for a refund, a student must notify SBG of the intent to withdraw, and to request a refund. To avoid confusion about the student's intention, or the date of notification, this advice should be in writing. The official receipt and Offer of Place document must be returned to SBG the time that the request is made.

Refunds at student request

Refunds of tuition, enrolment and material fees will be made in accordance with the following table. Refund of other fees will be made in accordance with the relevant policies.

Duration of course:
Date withdrawal request received:
Amount of refund:
More than 3 months
Within the first eight days of the course 1 (i.e., seven days after the first day)
Full refund of tuition, enrolment and material fees, less 10% or $500 whichever is the lesser of the two.

After eight days
No refund
The first day of the course is shown on the student's offer of a place. For students new to SBG, it is the first day of the orientation program, which is compulsory for these students. For all other students, it is the first day of classes. If, for any reason, a student is unable to start their course on the first day (for example, if a student is delayed in applying for a visa or permit), they must notify SBG and request a deferred starting date, which will be confirmed in writing. In the absence of such a request, or in cases where the request is declined, SBG will be entitled to assume that the student accepts the course start date originally proposed.

Refunds when SBG declines to take a student

If SBG declines to take a student into a course (whether because SBG has cancelled the course or otherwise), any tuition and material fee the student has already paid for that course (and the enrolment fee, if paid solely for that course) will be refunded in full. Refund of other fees will be made in accordance with the relevant policies.

No Refunds in other circumstances

SBG is not required to refund tuition, material or enrolment fees in any other situation. In particular, there will be no refund to a student who, after the eighth day of the course:
  • has their enrolment cancelled because the documentation supporting their application is determined to be incorrect and/or fraudulent;

  • is excluded from study by SBG for any reason (including inappropriate behaviour, poor attendance or inadequate academic progress);

  • has their visa/permit to study at SBG cancelled or whose application to renew a visa/permit to allow them to continue in a course is rejected by the relevant authorities; or

  • seeks a refund of fees that have been paid after the start of the course.

Refund of other fees will be made in accordance with the relevant policies.

Late requests

In exceptional circumstances, late notices of withdrawal and requests for refund may be submitted, and these will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Possible reasons for such requests include:
  • Serious illness or disability of the student;

  • Death of a student or close family member (parent, sibling, spouse or child);

  • Political, civil or natural event that prevents arrival of the student.

  • Inability to obtain an appropriate visa / permit to authorise study in the course

Full documentation must be supplied to support each application.

Full documentation must be supplied to support each application. Where a late request is approved, the amount to be refunded may be reduced at SBG's sole discretion. In particular, deductions may be made to take account of items such as fees for services provided prior to withdrawal, and any payments to agents in relation to the student's enrolment. Refund of other fees will be made in accordance with the relevant policies.

Refund of other fees

If a student has paid an airport collection fee, and gives notice of cancellation at least 1 week before their arrival date, then the fee will be refunded in full. In all other cases, the entire fee will be retained.

Payment of refunds
  • Refunds will be made by bank draft / telegraphic transfer in New Zealand Dollars or foreign currency equivalent at the time of the refund

  • Where the student is 18 years of age or older, the refund will be made to the student

SBG will advise the New Zealand Immigration Service of all international student withdrawals.

If a refund application is within the above requirements, we are required to inform the Immigration Service of changes to the student visa as part of the refund process. Therefore, we suggest that the student contact the Immigration Service promptly to advise of changes to their visa status, or that they are returning to their home country.

All applications for refunds must be on the Request for Refund Application Form, obtainable from the International Student Advisor. Supporting information must be submitted in writing to the International Student Advisor.
